Abstract: Polygraph tests play an important role in worldwide law enforcement. We addressed criticisms about standardization of field application by contrasting the highly standardized directed lie approach with the clinical probable lie approach. Participants (N=137) either did or did not steal an envelope containing $20. They were then given a polygraph test with either directed lie or probable lie comparison questions and variation in between repetition review. All variations produced high discrimination, but there were no effects between the variations. These results suggest that the more standardized directed lie variant should be used in the field.
